Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday on “ABC’s “Good Morning America” that she will “never be out of the game of politics.”
Clinton’s national political career included being first lady, junior senator for New York, Obama administration secretary of state, and two failed presidential runs in 2008 and 2016.
Referencing a new novel, ‘State of Terror’ by Clinton and author Louise Penny, co-host Amy Robach asked, “I believe you said it’s up to us to make the plot stays fictional. After writing this, any interest in getting back in the game of politics?”

I followed reports of Vice President Kamala Harris’s recent exchange with a student at George Mason University with great interest, and dismay. In many ways, it reminded me of an incident with Hilary Clinton, not in a good way.
Kamala addressed students at George Mason to mark National Voter Registration Day. Following her remarks, she opened the floor for questions.
One student commented to Kamala, “You brought up how the power of the people and demonstrations and organizing is very valuable in America. But I see that over the summer, there have been, like, protests and demonstrations in astronomical numbers standing with Palestine, but then just a few days ago there were funds allocated to continue backing Israel, which hurts my heart because it’s an ethnic genocide and a displacement of people — the same that happened in America — and I’m sure you’re aware of this. I bring this up also because…all this money ends up going to inflaming Israel and backing Saudi Arabia and whatnot. And …I just feel like I need to bring this up because it affects my life and people I really care about’s lives.”
Kamala listened, nodding, and replied, “I’m glad you did. And again, this is about the fact that your voice, your perspective, your experience, your truth, should not be suppressed. And it must be heard, right? A democracy is at its strongest when everyone participates. It is its weakest when anyone is left out. And that’s not only about being physically present, but that your voice is present … Our goal should be unity, but not uniformity.”
This is reminiscent of Hillary Clinton’s 1999 visit (as first lady) with Suha Arafat, wife of then Palestinian Authority president and long-time terrorist leader, Yasser Arafat.
As she introduced Hillary at the Ramallah gathering, Arafat commented in Arabic, “It is important to point out the severe damage caused by the intensive daily use of poison gas by Israeli forces in the past years that led to an increase in cancer cases among Palestinian women and children.”
Hillary sat quietly while listening to the translation, reportedly with no change of expression, or visible or verbal response to Arafat’s nonsensical and antisemitic claim. After the event, Hillary kissed Arafat as she explained, which is like a handshake. Hillary was excoriated. The following day, in Jordan, she rebuked Arafat for the comments.
“Everyone who supports this (peace) effort should refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and from baseless accusations... We do not believe that any kind of public inflammatory statements or excessive rhetoric is helpful to the peace process."
Hilary got credit for the rebuke, albeit late and not addressing it in person when Arafat’s initial baseless antisemitic comment was made. But the lack of doing so and not calling out the specific antisemitic nature of the comment, rather the unhelpfulness of “public inflammatory statements,” has stuck with her ever since.
Kamala should know better. She’s not only not new to international politics and diplomacy, she’s regarded as a friend of Israel. She knows that there is no ethnic genocide taking place by Israel against Palestinian or Israeli Arabs. She also knows that the Iron Dome is a strictly defensive weapon that protects Israelis and Arabs. Whether it was rhetoric or cheap pandering to the VP, the George Mason student noted, “I am sure you must be aware of this” as if getting Kamala’s affirmation. By her silence, she’s chosen to let the student’s comment stand.
Just like Hillary before her, Kamila deserves public excoriation. She blew it, and still has not commented on the exchange, which emboldens those who espouse inaccurate antisemitic lies. Yes, of course, all voices should be heard. However, when someone states something so egregious, blatantly false, much less antisemitic, and doing so in an academic environment, the proper response would have been to tell the uninformed student what’s wrong with her statement.
I wish Kamala said something like this:
Actually while I appreciate your comments, as Senator and Vice President, and someone who’s been involved in Middle Eastern politics, I have to tell you that you’re wrong. Especially here, at a university, where we need to learn facts to understand the world around us. Let me tell you why. First of all, the Iron Dome funding to which you referred is for a defensive weapon I wish Israel didn’t have to have. But I am glad that it does, and that we are funding it. It is saving lives. Hamas and other terrorists have violated every relevant law and morality by firing thousands of rockets at Israeli communities, and doing so while hiding behind civilians in Gaza. This needs to stop, but as long as they keep doing it, I’ll be the first to stand up to support Israel in its obligation to defend itself, and support the Iron Dome in doing so.
Then she should have continued,
As for your comment about ethnic genocide, let’s be clear that there is not and has never been an ethnic genocide against Palestinian Arabs. You need to study your history a little more closely. What’s happening in the Middle East does not come close to the genocides that have actually taken place in Armenia, the Holocaust, Rwanda, etc. Or against Christian Arabs living under ISIS and elsewhere. There’s just no parallel. But if you look at the facts, an ethnic genocide means mass murder of a particular racial, ethnic, or religious group. When you speak in these terms you cheapen the suffering of those who have actually suffered genocide. Also, you need to note, that since 1948, both the number of Israeli Arabs and Palestinian Arabs has continued to grow. I hope you see the illogical points of your statement and how the facts prove you wrong.

Obama’s Democratic Party administration launched a furious salvo of denunciations, with then Vice President Joe Biden calling Assange a “high-tech terrorist” and Hilary Clinton reportedly asking, “Can’t we just drone this guy?” This opened the floodgates to a torrent of demands from Republicans and the right-wing media for his assassination.
Today marks fifteen years since WikiLeaks was founded by Australian publisher Julian Assange on October 4, 2006. In the years since, the small media organisation, founded on a shoestring, has become synonymous with the courageous exposure of government and corporate crimes, as well as the ever-more ferocious attempts of state agencies and the ruling elites to censor the internet and suppress independent journalism.
As with all recent anniversaries related to WikiLeaks and its founder, Assange is unable to celebrate today’s milestone with his colleagues, friends and family. Instead, he is in London’s Belmarsh Prison, a maximum-security facility dubbed Britain’s Guantanamo Bay, where he has been detained for more than two years, most of that time without having been convicted of any offence.

The cause of Assange’s imprisonment, an extradition request submitted by the Trump administration, remains in force under his successor President Joe Biden. Both the Democrats and the Republicans are committed to prosecuting Assange, under the draconian Espionage Act, for WikiLeaks’ publishing activities, including its exposures of war crimes, human rights violations and global diplomatic intrigues.
Despite having blocked Assange’s dispatch to the US in January on the grounds that he would likely die in American custody, the British judiciary has allowed an appeal which will be the subject of High Court hearings later this month.
The US prosecution has always been a transparent attempt to destroy Assange, finish WikiLeaks and suppress press freedom. The appeal hearings, however, will be held under conditions in which the US case has been fully exposed as a criminal enterprise, involving the most egregious violations of international law and the US Constitution.
Last month, Yahoo News published a detailed report, revealing that beginning in early 2017, the Trump administration and its then CIA director Mike Pompeo had plotted to kidnap Assange while he was a political refugee in London’s Ecuadorian embassy, and even to murder him. Former officials told the publication that both Trump and Pompeo had been at meetings where Assange’s assassination was discussed. The possibility of murdering other WikiLeaks staff in Europe was also canvassed.
The plans for an extraordinary rendition or a CIA hit were explicitly developed in response to the WikiLeaks publication of truthful and newsworthy information, as was the subsequent pseudo-legal attempt to extradite and prosecute Assange.
The immediate trigger for both was WikiLeaks’s 2017 exposure of CIA documents, exposing the agency as the biggest purveyor of malware in the world. The Vault 7 material, as it was known, revealed some of the CIA’s most closely-guarded dirty tricks, including techniques to attribute its own hacking activities to foreign powers, such as Russia, mass surveillance through smartphones and TVs, and attempts to develop the capability to take over car computer systems.
In response, Pompeo branded WikiLeaks a “hostile non-state intelligence agency.” The definition was aimed at allowing the US state to deploy its full arsenal of repression against Assange, because the American authorities knew their own claims that WikiLeaks worked with Russian intelligence were a sham. Instead, they settled on the new category, one which essentially equated publishing organisations that fell foul of the American government as the equivalent of terrorists.
While the discussions about Assange’s assassination may have been conducted in secret, the plans for extraordinary measures to be taken against WikiLeaks were carried out in plain sight. Indeed, the new definition of the organisation as a “hostile non-state intelligence agency” was adopted by the US Congress and Senate in the Intelligence Authorization Act for fiscal year 2018, with the overwhelming support of Democratic and Republican representatives.
In the weeks since Yahoo ’s report, its veracity has been all but confirmed by those implicated in the crimes it detailed. Pompeo has publicly declared that “pieces of it are true,” while demanding that the 30 former officials who were Yahoo’s sources “be prosecuted for speaking about classified activity inside the Central Intelligence Agency.”
When asked about the revelations last week, Biden’s press secretary Jen Psaki refused to make any comment, directing the journalist to instead inquire with the CIA. The response from the British authorities, who are implicated in the assassination plot, has been radio silence, while Australian politicians have also remained 'mum' or have dubiously professed ignorance.
For its part, the corporate media has downplayed or completely buried the story, despite it going to the heart of press freedom and the rights of the press. The revelations, more sensational than those that triggered Richard Nixon’s removal, have been treated as a minor news item. The general trend is summed up by the state British Broadcasting Corporation, which didn’t even publish a report on the Yahoo claims, except for an item on its Somali-language page.
The response is yet another demonstration of the central role of the official press in Assange’s persecution. Having relentlessly smeared the WikiLeaks’ founder for years, contributing to the conditions for his illegal arrest in 2019, they have since dropped the story, all the more so as the criminal character of the US campaign is revealed. Far from being a result of a personal dislike of Assange, the corporate media’s treatment of him is a marker of its transformation into an arm of the state, and a willing accomplice in the escalating drive to war and the accompanying assault on democratic rights.
WikiLeaks was established as an antithesis of the state and corporate-controlled media and its routine censorship of information that clashes with the interests of the powers-that-be.
Shortly after founding the organisation, Assange wrote a 2007 statement which summed up its mission. He wrote: “Authoritarian regimes create forces which oppose them by pushing against a people’s will to truth, love and self-realization. Plans which assist authoritarian rule, once discovered, induce further resistance. Hence such schemes are concealed by successful authoritarian powers until resistance is futile or outweighed by the efficiencies of naked power.”
In more popular terms, Assange outlined the same mission statement, when accepting the Sydney Peace Foundation’s Gold Medal in 2011. He explained:
“I always keep in mind something that was said by the great poet and novelist May Sarton: you have to think like a hero in order to act like a merely decent human being…
“We are objective, but we are not neutral. We are on the side of justice. Objectivity is not the same as neutrality. We are objective about the facts when it comes to reporting and not distorting facts. But we are not neutral about what kind of world we would like to see. We want to see a more just world.
“For my staff and me, WikiLeaks will always strive to be an intelligence agency of the people. And we will always—as long as whistle-blowers are willing to act as heroes—act like merely decent human beings.”
To further these aims, WikiLeaks introduced pioneering innovations, which have since been taken up more broadly, including by corporate outlets, but usually without attribution. This included the development of a digital dropbox for the receipt of leaks, and a model of collaboration involving multiple journalists and media organisations around the world examining material submitted by whistle-blowers and preparing it for publication.
In the years since 2006, WikiLeaks has fulfilled its mission statement, breaking more explosive revelations than perhaps any other publication. The full scope of the organisation’s publications spans millions of documents and dozens of releases, touching on political and economic life in every corner of the globe.
Among the most significant are those for which Assange has been charged. They include the Iraq and Afghan war logs, which revealed thousands of hidden civilian casualties and exposed the US-led invasions as the most brutal neo-colonial operations since the crimes of the Nazis.
Hundreds of thousands of US diplomatic cables revealed American imperialism’s involvement in coup-plotting, political corruption and anti-democratic conspiracies the world over.
Detainee files from the US military prison in Guantanamo Bay lifted the lid on a global dragnet, involving torture and the imprisonment of those whom the American government knew to be innocent of any crime.
WikiLeaks’s impact matched the significance of its publications and helps to explain the determined efforts of the American state and its allies to crush the organisation. The Collateral Murder video, showing US troops in an Apache gunship mowing down civilians and journalists, came to symbolise the criminality of the Iraq war. The diplomatic cables, providing an unprecedented picture of capitalist politics as it plays out behind closed doors, helped to trigger the revolutions that swept Egypt and Tunisia in 2011.
The ever-greater persecution of WikiLeaks and its founder corresponds with, and is one of the sharpest expressions of, a broader turn towards authoritarianism and dictatorship by governments around the world. As Leon Trotsky once explained: “Under the impact of class and international contradictions that are too highly charged, the safety switches of democracy either burn out or explode. That is what the short circuit of dictatorship represents.”
Assange’s case has demonstrated in spades that there is no constituency for the defence of democratic rights within the political establishment. All of the official parties in the US, Britain and Australia support his persecution, while the trade unions and pseudo-left organisations which once feigned sympathy abandoned him long ago.
This underscores the bankruptcy of those, such as the official Don’t Extradite Assange group, who call on people fighting for Assange’s freedom to limit their efforts to polite, moral appeals to the likes of Trump and Biden.
In reality, the fight for Assange’s liberty is inseparably connected to the struggle against imperialist war, authoritarianism and the outmoded capitalist system that underlies both. The working class, as it enters into struggle against the criminal “herd immunity” policies of the ruling classes and the onslaught on social conditions, needs to recognise that the fight for their own democratic rights is bound up with the fight for Assange’s freedom.

In the days of the Cold War, the narrative of the arch-reactionaries and anticommunists revolved around a conspiracy theory according to which the United States had been infiltrated at the highest levels by agents of the Soviet Union.
In the early 1950s, Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy led the anti-Soviet campaign, alleging that Russian spies occupied top positions in the government, in universities, in Hollywood and even in the military. The “Red Menace” was the pretext for attacking and delegitimizing all manifestations of social and political opposition, including the Civil Rights movement, as the work of “outside agitators” who received their orders from Moscow. It was Martin Dies, the Democratic congressman from Texas and initiator of the witch-hunting House Un-American Activities Committee, who declared in his 1940 book The Trojan Horse in America that Moscow had “envisioned an unusual opportunity to create racial hatred between the white and Negro citizens of the United States.”
In the late 1950s, after the heyday of McCarthy, the political thread was taken up by the John Birch Society, founded in 1958 by Massachusetts businessman Robert Welch, who notoriously declared that President Dwight D. Eisenhower was a “dedicated, conscious agent of the Communist conspiracy.”
In 1964, Welch backed the ultra-right Republican candidate Barry Goldwater, whose failed presidential campaign was heavily influenced by John Stormer’s book None Dare Call It Treason. “Will America continue to aid the communist enemy,” Stormer asked, “to disarm in the face of danger, to bow before communist dictators in every corner of the earth? The decision is yours.”
Nothing is dead in politics. The legacy of McCarthyism is now being revived by the campaign led by the Democratic Party and summed up in a hysterical screed published Wednesday in the Washington Post by Hillary Clinton, the self-professed former “Goldwater girl,” under the headline, “Mueller documented a serious crime against all Americans. Here’s how to respond.”
According to Clinton, “Our election was corrupted, our democracy assaulted, our sovereignty and security violated. This is the definitive conclusion of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s report.” The perpetrator again is Russia, which Clinton, citing the Mueller report, claims has carried out a “sweeping and systematic” attack on the United States.

Responsibility for Clinton’s defeat in the 2016 elections is attributed entirely to the operations of Russian bots and “Guccifer 2.0,” the persona of the individual who supposedly hacked Democratic Party emails. Her campaign, Clinton writes, was the “target of a Russian plot,” directed by President Vladimir Putin, who “seeks to weaken our country.”
And what did this new “conspiracy so immense” actually involve? According to the Mueller report itself, organizations associated with Russia allegedly spent $100,000 on Facebook ads. This is 0.12 percent of the $81 million spent by the Democratic and Republican election campaigns themselves on Facebook ads, in a campaign dominated by the $5 billion spent by the billionaire backers of the two parties to buy the election.
As for the release of Democratic Party emails, even if one accepts the unsubstantiated claim that it was Russian operatives who turned them over to WikiLeaks, what the emails revealed were true facts about the operations of Clinton and the Democratic National Committee (DNC)—facts that the electorate had every right to know. Among the documents released were Clinton’s speeches to Goldman Sachsand other banks, for which she was paid hundreds of thousands of dollars. Other leaked emails exposed the corrupt efforts of the DNC to rig the primaries against Bernie Sanders.
Clinton lost in the 2016 elections because the Democratic Party, in line with the class interests it represents, made a calculated decision not to raise any social issues or make any appeal to the working class in its campaign against Trump. Do Clinton and company really expect the public to believe that Facebook ads put out by Russian agents were behind the collapse in voter turnout in working-class areas of Michigan, Wisconsin and other states?
The victory of the billionaire demagogue Trump was the result of widespread disillusionment with the Democratic Party after eight years of the Obama administration, which broke every campaign promise and exposed as lies the empty prattle about “hope” and “change.” Obama focused his energies on bailing out Wall Street and shoring up the wealth of the corporate and financial elite.
In her column, Clinton goes on to call for an alliance between the Democratic Party and the Republicans. The situation calls for “clear-eyed patriotism, not reflexive partisanship,” she writes. She urges Republicans to work with Democrats in an intensified campaign against Russia—with or without the Trump administration. She writes: “It’s up to members of both parties to see where that road map [provided by the Mueller report] leads—to the eventual filing of articles of impeachment, or not. Either way, the nation’s interests will be best served by putting party and political considerations aside and being deliberate, fair and fearless.”
Clinton wants a bipartisan foreign policy that is “fearless” in its aggression against not only Russia, but also China. “Unless checked, the Russians will interfere again in 2020, and possibly other adversaries, such as China or North Korea, will as well,” she warns. Unless Trump is “held accountable, the president will likely redouble his efforts to advance Putin’s agenda, including rolling back sanctions, weakening NATO and undermining the European Union.”
Changing what needs to be changed, such words could have been penned by Robert Welch himself. Confronting a fascistic president, the Democrats have managed to frame their entire opposition around a right-wing narrative. If the Democrats had their way and Trump were removed—to be replaced, don’t forget, by the ultra-right Vice President Mike Pence—it is almost certain that the immediate consequence would be war with nuclear-armed Russia.
Inextricably connected to the conflicts over foreign policy is the escalation of the attack on democratic rights within the United States. Reprising the ravings of Dies, social discontent is attributed to the nefarious efforts of Russia to “sow discord” within the United States.
Significantly, Clinton cites as a model the actions of the ruling class after the September 11, 2001 attacks, when “Congress established an independent, bipartisan commission to recommend steps that would help guard against future attacks.” She concludes, “We need a similar commission to help protect our elections.”
The September 11 attacks—a terrorist atrocity that killed nearly 3,000 people—were followed by the Patriot Act, the Homeland Security Department, the Northern Command, domestic spying, Guantanamo Bay, the institution of torture and drone assassinations as government policy, and other crimes. The campaign of the Democrats over the Russian “attack”—a lie fashioned from whole cloth—has been accompanied by far-reaching moves to censor the internet under the guise of combating “fake news.”
The Democrats’ warmongering and attack on democratic rights come together in the persecution of WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange, whose enduring contribution to the population of the world was the exposure of the crimes of American imperialism. For this, Assange is currently imprisoned in Britain, facing imminent rendition to the United States. The courageous whistleblower Chelsea Manning is in jail for refusing to testify against him.
Such is Clinton’s defense of “our democracy.”
All of this further demonstrates that in the conflict between Trump and the Democratic Party there is no progressive or democratic faction. The anti-Russia narrative has not been challenged by any section of the Democratic Party, including Bernie Sanders, who is again seeking to cover up this warmongering party with a thin veneer of social reforms that it has no intention of implementing.
The conflict between the Democrats and the Trump administration is a conflict between two reactionary factions of the ruling class. All those political organizations and groups that are seeking to direct social opposition behind the Democratic Party are playing the most criminal role. They are no less terrified than Trump and the Democrats of the development of a genuine socialist movement of the working class, which will oppose American capitalism and its wars.
